What are Asian Totals?

In our last piece we dissected the use of Asian Handicaps in sports betting. Asian Totals are similar in the way that results are generated and formed, however the market has no bearing on the result of the game. Instead, it is concerned with how many goals are scored during a match.

While you might be wondering whether these markets are just totals (over/under) markets, there are distinct differences.

Similar to Asian Handicaps, these markets can be graded as a half-win or a half-loss, rather than just a win, loss or push. While regular total markets use whole and half numbers, Asian Totals use quarter numbers. For the sake of this guide, we will go through both.

Let’s start with a totals market, using whole numbers.

Manchester United vs Liverpool

Betting on over 2 total goals will mean:If there are 3 goals in the match, your bet will grade as a win.If there are 2 goals in the match, your bet will grade as a push and your stake will be returned to you. If there is 1 goal in the match, your bet will be graded as a loss.

Using half numbers is a lot simpler.

Betting on over 1.5 total goals will mean: If there are 2 goals in the match, your bet will grade as a win. If there is 1 goal in the match, your bet will grade as a loss.

Asian totals get a little more confusing than this, with quarter numbers being a huge part of the market. This also results in the possibility of a half loss or a half win outcome.

Let’s stick with United vs Liverpool

Betting on over 3.25 goals means half your stake is on Over 3’ and the other is on ‘Over 3.5’. Therefore;If the total goals for the match are 4 or more, your bet will grade as a win. If there are 3 goals in the match, your bet is graded as a half loss and you are given half your stake back.If there are 2 goals or less, your bet is a loss. If you are betting on under 3.25 goals, it means half your stake is on ‘Under 3’ and the other half on ‘Under 3.5’If there are 4 or more goals in the match, your bet is a loss. If there are 3 goals, your bet is a half win.If there are 2 or less goals, your bet is graded as a win.
