More than 1,000 South American football fans were selected by market research firm Censuswide, in partnership with Stake.com
Uruguay legends Luis Suarez and Diego Forlan collected just a combined 6.5% of a vote of more than 1,000 South American football fans to crown the greatest striker from the continent.
A survey, conducted by us here at Stake.com in conjunction with market research firm Censuswide, wanted to determine the greatest South American players in every single position to herald the arrival of Lionel Messi and his Argentine colleagues.
Viewed as the GOAT South American player, Messi was welcomed to the Argentina training camp in Miami by Stake.com ambassador Sergio Aguero with a herd of goats, a welcome befitting a team viewed as one of the greatest ever.
South America has produced some of the best strikers in the history of world football, with more than 1,000 fans given the unenviable task of picking the best of all time.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Lionel Messi and Pele were top of the pile, followed by the Brazilian Ronaldo - ‘O Fenômeno’ himself - to make up the top three of the votes.
Fellow Brazil striker Romario came fourth in the voting with 6% of the vote, with Uruguay legend Luis Suarez grabbing just 5% of the vote.
