Premier League 2023-24 Schedule & Overview
The Premier League features the top twenty sides in the English soccer pyramid. Aside from being the biggest and most popular league in the UK, the Premier League has become hugely popular all over the world. It’s estimated that the total cumulative audience is more than 4 billion people.
How the Premier League Works
The 2023-24 season kicks off on August 12th and goes on until May 19, 2024. Each team in the league plays 38 games, a home and away fixture against each opponent. Three points are earned for each win, while draws see both sides get a single point, and defeats earn none.
At the end of the season, the club with the most points is crowned the champion, while the bottom three teams are relegated to the Championship. If two or more teams are tied for points, goal difference is used to separate them. This is the number of goals scored minus goals conceded.
European Football
Meanwhile, teams in the top four places get to qualify for next season’s Champions League, and the fifth place qualifies for the Europa League. These European competitions are a chance for English teams to play the best clubs from all over the continent, such as Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich. Lifting the trophy is a huge accomplishment.
Throughout the season, some clubs must compete in Europe as well as the league. This often means traveling long distances and playing multiple games in a week. When making your predictions, always take this into account. While playing in the Champions League is an aspiration for every club, it can have a negative effect due to fixture congestion.
Premier League Picks & Predictions
What makes the Premier League so interesting is that many different teams compete for the same points, but they all have different aims for the season. The top teams want to qualify for European football and compete for the title. On the other hand, smaller teams are just hoping to survive and avoid relegation.
While the biggest teams usually end up in the top places, that’s not always the case. For example, Leicester shocked the world when they won the Premier League title in the 2015-16 season despite being ranked as 5000/1 underdogs.
Favourites & Picks to Win
Before betting on the Premier League, you should know more about each team and their chances to win. Of course, teams change every season as new players are signed and sold. On top of that, managerial changes make a big difference in how well a team performs throughout a season.
Remember to follow responsible gambling guidelines when betting on the Premier League. Below are some of our EPL predictions.
Who Will Win the Premier League?
With half the season played, we’re getting ever closer to finding out who will be crowned the Premier League Champions of 2023-24. It’s been a very exciting title race already, and with multiple contenders in the mix, anything could happen over the next few weeks.
Arsenal led the title race for a while, but have dropped out after losing form after Christmas. Meanwhile, Aston Villa have surprised a lot of fans by putting together an impressive run and could easily be challenging for the title.
Liverpool and Manchester City look to be favorites to win the title, even if City don’t look as dominant as they have in previous seasons. Meanwhile, Tottenham have dealt well with changes to their squad and could still challenge if things go their way.
Manchester City
Manchester City are front runners for yet another title. While they haven’t looked their best so far, they often go on a run late in the season and become very difficult to beat. Haaland hasn’t quite hit the heights of last year, although he’s still the league’s top scorer. With Kevin De Bruyne now returning from injury he could increase his finishing rate even more. When City’s attack is in form, they’re easily the best team in the world.
Liverpool
Liverpool are second-favorites to win the title at this point in the season, currently sitting top of the table. So far, Liverpool have only lost a single game, and they’ve also conceded the fewest goals in the league. While they’ve performed very well in recent weeks, the loss of top scorer Mohamed Salah will hurt them. Salah won’t return from the Africa Cup of Nations before the 24th of January. If Egypt progresses past the group stage he could miss multiple league games.
Arsenal
Arsenal started the season very brightly and were top of the league on Christmas day. However, the London side have experienced a slump in their last few games, with just one league win in their last five games. While they’re still playing well, they’ve been struggling to convert chances, with all of their forward players out of form. If they can find their rhythm again, they’ll definitely still be in title contention, but the lack of a natural goalscorer may hurt them.
Aston Villa
Aston Villa surprised almost everyone this season by continuing their excellent run of form under new manager Unai Emery. They look like real title contenders, and while they may not have the squad depth to challenge the bigger sides, a bit of fortune could see them grab the title. Ollie Watkins, Douglas Luiz and John McGinn have all been excellent. They’re only behind Manchester City in the number of goals scored and their defense also looks solid with a brilliantly worked offside trap.
Who Will Finish in the Top 4?
Finishing in the top four positions on the table means qualifying for the next season of the Champions League. This is the goal for all of the so-called “Top Six,” which includes Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham. However, many other teams are now also competing for European places, such as Newcastle, Brighton and Aston Villa.
In the previous season, the top four were Manchester City, Arsenal, Manchester United and Newcastle, while Liverpool finished in fifth. This season, we’re predicting:
Manchester City
Liverpool
Arsenal
Aston Villa
However, there are lots of top contenders. Here are the most likely contenders for the top four EPL spots this season, ranked from top to bottom:
Manchester City
Manchester City are the current champions of Europe, having completed a historic treble last season. They’re expected to challenge for the title once more. With their squad, something would have to go seriously wrong for them to fail to qualify for the Champions League. Most experts agree that they’re nailed on to finish in the top four places. Despite struggling at some points this season, City still look like one of the best teams in the world and it would be a huge shock if they fell off the pace at this point.
Liverpool
Liverpool looked like a shadow of their previous title-winning team last season. A struggling defense and midfield meant they dropped down the table. Liverpool failed to qualify for the Champions League, joining the Europa League instead. This season, the Reds have a bolstered midfield, and are competing for top four again. What’s more, they look like serious title contenders thanks to a strong defense and attack. Unless they slip up, there’s no way they finish lower than fourth.
Arsenal
Arsenal qualified for the Champions League for the first time in six years last season. Under Arteta, the team has looked completely different, and the owners have backed their manager with big transfers this summer. Once more, they’re likely to finish in the top four. Although they’ve slipped up over the winter period, they should still have enough quality to stay within the Champions League places and can still challenge for the title if they get back to winning ways.
Aston Villa
While they finished last season strongly, few expected Aston Villa to continue that form into 2023-24. However, Unai Emery has clearly built a serious title-contending squad. Villa have managed to stay within reach of the bigger clubs and Villa Park has become a fortress. While they might drop out of the race in the final weeks, they should still have enough to remain in the battle for top four.
Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham finished way off the pace last season due to managerial mayhem. This time, they have a fresh face in charge. Despite losing Harry Kane, they have a great chance to break into the Champions League spots, as they play fewer fixtures than the other top sides. They’ve been great so far, but the loss of Maddison to injury as well as Son Heung-min leaving to play in the Asia Cup may hurt their chances.
Manchester United
Manchester United haven’t quite hit the ground running under new manager Erik Ten Hag just yet. The Dutchman has instilled new tactics and ideas into the team, but the squad perhaps still needs work. Midway through the season, they’re currently in eighth place, and have been incredibly inconsistent. They have the lowest goal difference of any team in the top ten places and need to find form if they have a chance of qualifying for the Champions League.
Brighton
Brighton have been a breath of fresh air to the Premier League, playing exciting football against the top sides and performing extremely well on a small budget. They’ve sold some of their big stars in the summer but have an impressive setup that has seen them punch above their weight. They’re currently nine points off fourth, so have a lot of work to do. However, they could still qualify for the Champions League if results go their way.
Newcastle United
Newcastle entered the Champions League for the first time in twenty years at the end of the previous season. In 2023-24, they’ve struggled somewhat due to injuries and a more congested fixture schedule. Newcastle are currently eleven points off the top four. However, it’s still difficult to count them out, especially with all their players back and in good form.
West Ham United
West Ham have been a surprise for many this season, with David Moyes once again showing why he was once considered one of the top managers in English football. They’re just six points off the top four at the halfway point of the season, meaning it’s definitely possible. However, injuries to top scorer Jarrod Bowen and Lucas Paqueta may have burst their bubble.
Who Will Be Relegated from the Premier League 2023-24?
Perhaps even bigger than the title race each season is the battle to avoid relegation. The bottom three teams get sent down to the Championship, replaced by the top three teams from the league below.
Last season saw heartbreak for fans of Leicester City, Southampton and Leeds United. Who will be going down this year, and which sides will be getting dragged into a relegation scrap? Here are our most likely candidates for this season’s relegation:
Sheffield United
Sheffield United did well to reach the Premier League, operating on a tiny budget. However, the lack of spending to boost the quality of the squad is bad news for Blades fans. In addition, they lost key players Sander Berge and Iliman Ndiaye, and these losses show in the side’s current league position. Sheffield are firmly rooted to the bottom of the table with just nine points in twenty games. It will take a miracle for them to survive relegation.
Burnley
Burnley are another side battling relegation this season, with just eleven points at the midway point. They have the fewest goals scored and highest goals conceded of any team other than Sheffield United, and need to turn things around to survive. The January window will be important for them as they look to bring in new talent.
Luton Town
Luton have been promoted to the top flight for the first time in the club’s history. Just ten years ago, they were playing in non-league football, making it one of the most impressive stories in the history of football. However, their squad isn’t Premier League quality, and Luton have struggled so far. At the halfway point, they’re currently in 18th, although only one point from safety. They could survive if things go their way, although it will be a tough battle.
Other Teams Likely to be Fighting Against Relegation
The relegation battle usually draws in multiple teams over the course of the season. Everton, Nottingham Forest, Brentford and Crystal Palace may all face the drop at some point over the next few weeks. Everton have been unlucky to receive a ten point deduction and this may prove costly in their fight for survival, despite the great work of Sean Dyche.
Premier League Betting Tips, Odds & Preview
Before you start betting, make sure you check the stats and the team news. While the big teams might be favorites, don’t count out the smaller clubs, especially when they’re playing at home.
The unpredictability of the Premier League is one of the reasons why fans love it so much. Every team has talented players, and even teams outside the top six can compete. Don’t count out West Ham, with head coach David Moyes helping his side challenge and break into European spots. Meanwhile, Unai Emery will count on players like Youri Tielemans and Moussa Diaby as he looks to improve on last season’s strong finish.
Types of Bets & How to Bet on Premier League
If you want to get into English Premier League betting, you need to know the different types of bets and what they mean. These are called markets, and every game will have lots you can choose from. You can learn more about how to bet on soccer in our full guide. Here are some of the most popular:
Match Odds
Also known as a moneyline bet, this is simply a prediction of the outcome of a particular match. You can bet on either team to win or for the game to end in a draw. For example, if you think that West Ham will beat Brentford in their upcoming game, you’d bet on West Ham. If West Ham win, you’ll win your bet. However, you’d lose if it’s a draw or Brentford win. Find out more in our moneyline betting guide
Over/Under Goals
On top of betting on the outcome, you can also place a wager on how many goals you think will be scored in the game. For example, choosing over 2.5 goals scored between Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool. If three or more goals are scored in the game, you’d win your bet. It doesn’t matter which team scores them or what the final result is.
Correct Score
This one gives you high odds on your bet, where you predict the exact score of the match. Of course, it’s difficult to get this right, but the potential rewards are much higher. For example, you could bet that Arsenal will beat Manchester United by 1-0. If the final score is 1-0, you’ll win your bet, but any other scorelines will be a loss.
Both Teams to Score
This is a simple bet on whether or not you think both teams will score at some point in the match. You can choose yes or no. For example, in a game between Burnley and Newcastle, if you bet on yes, you’d win your bet, provided both teams score.
Asian Handicaps/Totals
Asian handicaps and Asian totals are another way to bet on Premier League games. With these, you predict the margin of victory by betting over or under a certain number. It’s essentially a type of spread betting . You can learn what are Asian totals and more in our guide to sports betting handicaps .
Props
Prop bets are those that aren’t tied to the outcome of the game. You can learn more about these in our prop betting guide . In soccer, common props include betting on the number of corners or cards. You can also bet on a specific player to score a goal.
Parlays
This is where you combine multiple selections on your bet slip into one bet. For example, you can bet on Brentford, Aston Villa and Manchester United to all win their games on the weekend. You can also combine multiple selections on the same match, which is known as a same-game parlay . Find out more in our parlay guide .
Outrights/Futures
Of course, you don’t just have to bet on what happens during games. You can also place outrights, also known as futures. These are predictions of what you think will happen by May 19. For example, you can bet on which team you think will win the league or bet on a team to be relegated. You can also bet on the top goalscorer. We predict Haaland will top the leaderboard once more.
