F1 2026 season - what to know before you bet

This season, the Drag Reduction System (DRS) was replaced by Overtake Mode. This, combined with the 50/50 hybrid power split, has led to more overtaking opportunities and less predictable race outcomes.

So far, Mercedes F1 has made the most of these changes and leads the way in the Constructors’ Championship standings. Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli is out in front with 5 wins, ahead of his teammate George Russell, who has 1 win. However, since they updated their car following the Miami GP, Ferrari has emerged as a possible contender, with strong racing from both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc. Hamilton is now 2nd in the Drivers’ Championship standings, after winning the Barcelona-Catalunya GP.

Up next, the teams head to the Red Bull Ring in Austria, then to Silverstone for the British GP, and on to Spa-Francorchamps for the Belgian GP. Check out our F1 race betting picks page for detailed analysis of upcoming races.

F1 2026 drivers and teams

Kimi Antonelli and George Russell have been key for Mercedes in building a massive lead in the race for the Constructors’ Championship. Ferrari F1 are currently a distant second, but their performances have improved significantly, and Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc are both excellent drivers. In the race for the Drivers’ Championship, Antonelli is out in front, with Hamilton and Russel currently attempting to close the gap.

Meanwhile, last year's champion Lando Norris and his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri are in 5th and 6th place in the Drivers’ Championship standings. Following a series of technical problems with the Red Bull car, 4-time world champion Max Verstappen is in 7th place.

This season saw the inclusion of 2 new F1 teams as Cadillac became the first independent constructor to join since 2016. Meanwhile, Audi took over from Sauber.

F1 betting tips for the 2026 season

  1. The track layout and features matter - Each GP is held at a different track in another part of the world, offering a unique layout and characteristics. These will affect team strategies, and some layouts favour specific car setups. For example, street circuits like Monaco and Singapore tend to be narrower, favouring cars with agile handling over power. Check the performance of each team and driver at similar tracks.

  2. Overtaking is more viable thanks to the Overtake Mode - The new Overtake Mode has changed how races work, giving the chasing car a higher speed limit against the leading car. This has made overtaking more viable, ensuring that cars starting behind still have an opportunity to win.

  3. Qualifying is still a strong predictor of final race outcome - While Overtake Mode has made overtaking easier, the qualifying session is still an excellent indicator of the final race outcome. Drivers starting in pole position so far this season have won 5 out of 7 races. George Russell is the only driver in 2026 to have started in pole and not won the race.
