Major Fighters in UFC Fight Night 246: Moreno vs. Albazi
Brandon Moreno
Former flyweight champ Brandon Moreno has now lost his last two fights to split decision, narrowly losing the title to Alexandre Pantoja and losing against Brandon Royval. While neither decision went his way, they were both very close fights, and Moreno could easily get back into the title picture with another win. However, a third successive loss could be bad news for him, and so he’ll be fighting with even more determination in this main event.
Amir Albazi
Albazi is currently undefeated in his professional MMA career, with 17 wins and 1 no-contest. The Iraqi fighter has looked like the real deal since entering the UFC, racking up 5 wins, with 3 of those coming by way of stoppage. His most recent fight was against Kai Kara France in 2023, which ended in a controversial split decision win. He was originally scheduled to fight Moreno back in February but pulled out due to a neck injury.
Rose Namajunas
Namajunas has previously held the women’s strawweight title twice but moved to the women’s flyweight division after losing her belt to Carla Esparza in 2022. Although she lost her first fight in the division against Manon Fiorot, she has improved since, with wins against Ribas and Cortez. Now, she’ll hope for another win to move further up the rankings and into contention for the next title shot.
Erin Blanchfield
Blanchfield is currently ranked 3rd in the women’s flyweight division and has a 12-2 professional record. Her only loss in the UFC came in her last fight, as she lost a decision to Manon Fiorot. She has some great wins on her record, including submission victories against Molly McCann and Jessica Andrade. Before entering the UFC, she lost to Tracey Cortez in 2019, but she’s improved a lot since then and could be a contender.
Moreno comes into this fight off the back of two losses, but the MMA odds still have him as the favourite. The former champion came very close to victory in his last fights, including against Pantoja, who currently holds the division belt.
Despite his impressive career, this fight will certainly be Albazi’s biggest test yet. Many fans and commentators thought he should have lost against Kai Kara France, and he’ll now face a fighter who has the heart and skills to defend his takedowns and push the pace against him. His striking will need to improve if he’s to have a chance of success.
This is an interesting matchup, as both Namjunas and Blanchfield have lost to Fiorot. Admittedly, Namjunas was injured in her fight, and it was her debut in the division. Still, they’re essentially fighting for the chance to get a title shot after Fiorot inevitably faces Shevchenko. Rose has proved to be one of the best strikers in women’s MMA, but the question remains over her size and strength in the division.
Blanchfield will look to use her grappling against Namajunas as much as possible, testing her takedown defence and avoiding her striking. She’s currently the favourite according to the UFC odds, but only just. It should be a close and competitive fight.
