When is the Ryder Cup 2023?
The 2023 Ryder Cup commences from Friday, September 29, 2023 through to Sunday, October 1, 2023. This year will be the 44th Ryder Cup and it will be staged by Team Europe at the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Rome, Italy.
History of the Ryder Cup Golf Tournament
The brainchild of the Ryder Cup concept was British entrepreneur Samuel Ryder, who donated the trophy and created the momentum for the tournament to become the exciting competition it is today.
Since the first Ryder Cup in 1927, there have been 42 further official Ryder Cup events. Originally, the Ryder Cup was contested by the USA and Great Britain/Ireland. However, in 1979, a decision was taken to embrace more European players to create a united Europe team.
In the US’ 43 Ryder Cup golf events, it has won 27, lost 14 and tied just twice. Since Team Europe was formed in 1979, it has won 11, lost nine and tied only once.
Who is Playing in the Ryder Cup 2023?
Prior to the shock merger between the PGA and LIV Golf, it looked like only the players remaining loyal to the PGA and DP World Tour would be eligible to participate in this year’s Ryder Cup. However, the latest deal opens the door to participation again for the likes of Phil Mickelson representing the United States, as well as Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood and Sergio Garcia representing Team Europe.
Luke Donald is expected to captain Team Europe this year, with the backbone of the European team likely to include Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland, Matt Fitzpatrick and Tyrrell Hatton.
As for Team USA, Zach Johnson will captain the team this year, with the likes of Jordan Spieth, Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Justin Thomas and Patrick Cantlay set to form the spine of the American players. It’s still possible players from LIV Golf will be eligible for selection, providing they qualify through the points-based system.
Format and Schedule of the Ryder Cup
Each match across the three-day event is worth one point. If a match is tied, each team gets half a point. During the opening two days, there’s a four-match session of fourballs and a four-match session of foursomes.
A fourball sees two-man teams go head-to-head, with each member of the team playing their own ball. The team shooting the lowest scores on each hole win the hole.
A foursome is another two-man team event, with just one ball per team, per hole. Players hit alternate shots and work together to get the lowest possible score.
The last day of the Ryder Cup is reserved for a dozen singles matches, where players go head-to-head on the course.
