What is Colombia Primera A?
The Categoría Primera A, better known as simply the Primera A, is Colombia’s top national soccer league. The best clubs in the country play in the Primera A, and the league has created some incredibly exciting players, such as Carlos Valderrama and James Rodriguez.
The league is split into two separate tournaments, which each declare an independent championship. Twenty teams from across the country compete in the opening stage of each tournament, with the top teams then progressing to the semi-finals and finals to declare the champions.
History of the Colombia Primera A
The Colombian football league is relatively new compared to other South American soccer leagues, such as the Chilean Primera Division and the Uruguayan Primera Division. It was only established in 1948.
However, professional football competitions were happening in Colombia even earlier than this. The first-ever tournament organised between Colombian clubs took place in 1918, featuring just two teams based in Bogota, Bartolinos and Colombia FC.
In 1948, the Colombian Football Federation and DIMAYOR, the organising body for professional soccer in Colombia, established the Primera Division. The first edition of the tournament featured 10 teams, all of which still exist today.
The first season of the Primera A was won by Santa Fe, and the competition has been won by 16 teams in total. Atlético Nacional have won the most titles with 18 and are the current champions, while Millonarios have 16 titles.
Format & Schedule of Colombia Primera A
The Primera A format is a bit different to major European soccer leagues such as La Liga and the Premier League. It consists of two separate tournaments: the Torneo Apertura and Torneo Finalizacion. The season kicks off with the Apertura, where all teams play one match against each opponent. Teams earn 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw and 0 for a loss.
The top 8 teams from the league stage enter the semi-finals, where they’re placed in 2 groups of 4. The winners of each group then play in a 2-legged final to determine the champion.
The Finalización tournament takes place in the second half of the season and follows the same format. The winner of either tournament earns qualification to the group stage of the Copa Libertadores.
The best non-champion based on aggregate points from both tournaments makes the second stage of qualifying for the Copa Libertadores, while the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th best teams that didn’t qualify for the Copa Libertadores will qualify for the Copa Sudamericana.
An aggregate table of the past two seasons is also used to measure average points per game. The bottom 2 teams on this table at the end of the season will be relegated to the Categoría Primera B.
