When is the Bundesliga 2023/24?
The 61st German Bundesliga starts on Friday 18 August 2023, with Werder Bremen hosting champions Bayern Munich at the Weserstadion in Bremen. The week before the Bundesliga season begins, Bayern take on RB Leipzig in the Supercup at the Allianz Arena on 12 August.
History of Bundesliga
The Bundesliga was founded in August 1963 and followed some turbulent times in Germany. The new league brought hope of reconciliation after the Second World War, and it has gone from strength to strength ever since.
Initially, the league was for west German teams, while the DS-Oberliga was established for teams in the east of the country. Hansa Rostock and Dynamo Dresden became the first two east German teams to join the Bundesliga following reunification.
Unsurprisingly, German giants Bayern Munich are the most successful team in Bundesliga history, with 32 titles to their name. They have won the Bundesliga eleven years in a row, following their final-day triumph at the end of the 2022-23 campaign, where they pipped Borussia Dortmund to the crown in a thrilling end to the season.
Twelve teams have been crowned Bundesliga champions since the league’s inception. Alongside Bayern, Borussia Dortmund, Werder Bremen, Hamburg, VFB Stuttgart, Cologne, and Kaiserslautern have all won the trophy at least twice.
Which Teams Play in the Bundesliga 2023/24?
Eighteen teams compete in the 2023/24 Bundesliga, as has been the case since the 1992-93 season. Schalke 04 and Hertha BSC were relegated to the
Bundesliga 2
at the end of last season, being replaced by FC Heidenheim and Darmstadt 98.
As a result, the following teams will be hoping to lift the Meisterschale at the end of the 2023/24 season:
Bayern Munich
Borussia Dortmund
RB Leipzig
Union Berlin
Freiburg
Bayer Leverkusen
Eintracht Frankfurt
VFL Wolfsburg
FSV Mainz
Borussia Munchengladbach
