What is the UEFA Women's Champions League?
The UEFA Women’s Champions League is an annual soccer tournament featuring the best European teams in women’s soccer. Like the men’s Champions League, top clubs from leagues that are part of UEFA can qualify for the tournament. The competition features a qualifying stage, group stage and knockouts before the final decides the champions.
History of the UEFA Women's Champions League
Originally known as the UEFA Women’s Cup, the tournament was first held in 2001, featuring 32 teams that qualified for the competition by winning their domestic league. The inaugural competition was won by Frankfurt, who defeated Umeå IK in the final.
The 2004-05 season saw the competition expanded to include more teams, with a larger qualifying stage that featured 9 groups of 4. After qualifying and the group stage, the knockout rounds were played home and away, including the final.
On 11 December 2008, UEFA announced that they would be rebranding the competition as the UEFA Women’s Champions League starting from the 2009-10 season. The rebrand also involved a change in format, expanding the number of teams taking part to each champion of 55 UEFA association leagues as well as runners-up of some leagues.
Since then, the UEFA Champions League has been expanded several times, and a new format change is also planned for the 2025-26 season.
Overall, Lyon is the most successful club in the history of the tournament, with 8 titles, including a most recent win in 2022. Frankfurt, the winners of the original tournament, are the second-most successful, with 4 titles.
Format & Schedule of Women's Champions League 2025-26
Teams from all of the 55 member associations of UEFA can potentially qualify for the Champions League each season. The competition begins with two rounds of qualifying. The level at which each club enters the tournament depends on their league position and coefficient ranking of their league.
Once the qualifying stage is complete, the group stage comprises of 16 teams split between 4 groups of 4. Teams play each opponent within the league, earning 3 points for a win 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss. Each team is ranked in the group based on their points, and the top two teams progress to the knockout stage.
During the knockout rounds, teams play two fixtures against their opponents, one at home and one away. Extra time and penalties are used to decide tied games. The final, held at the Estadio Jose Alvalade, Lisbon, is a single match to decide the champions.
