What is the UEFA Super Cup?
The UEFA Super Cup is an annual cup competition contested between the winners of the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League, the top 2 European club soccer competitions. It traditionally takes place in August, before the European football seasons get underway. Organised by UEFA, the competition is a good chance for fans to see the top players in Europe, though it’s a single match, decided by penalties if the scores are level after regulation time.
History of the UEFA Super Cup
In 1971, Anton Witkamp, a Dutch sports reporter, came up with the idea of the European Super Cup to determine the very best team in Europe. At the time, there were 2 major European competitions: the European Cup, which would later become the Champions League, and the European Cup Winners’ Cup, which was ultimately replaced with the Europa League.
The first edition of the tournament was held in 1972, although it’s considered unofficial as it wasn’t endorsed by UEFA. However, following the success of the competition, UEFA relented and approved the competition in 1973, where Ajax beat AC Milan 6-1 over two legs.
The Super Cup continued to be held annually over the years, excluding 1974, 1981, and 1985. However, after the 1998-99 season, the Cup Winners’ Cup was discontinued, and after 2000, the Super Cup was contested between the winners of the Champions League and the UEFA Cup, which later became the Europa League.
25 different clubs have won the UEFA Super Cup over the years, with Real Madrid holding the record for most wins, having lifted the trophy 6 times in their history.

UEFA Super Cup Betting Tips, Predictions & Strategies
Research recent form - The Super Cup is unique as it’s part of pre-season, which can mean that squads look very different since their victory in the UCL or UEL. Look at recent preseason results and any major transfers or signings that could affect the performance of the team.
Team motivation - While the Champions League winners are the stronger team, and usually the betting favourites. However, as it’s a preseason game, not every team takes it seriously. Consider the motivations of each side and how important the trophy is likely to be for them.
Bet on the under line - The last 4 Super Cups have all resulted in under 2.5 goals. Now that extra time isn’t included, it makes sense that most games would be lower scoring, especially as it’s preseason and teams are still warming up and staying disciplined.
