What is the Copa America?
Copa America is an international soccer tournament contested by the nations of CONEMBOL and CONCACAF. Hosted every four years, 16 teams from two federations come together to try to be crowned as champions of the Americas.
When is the next Copa America?
The 2028 Copa America will represent the 49th edition of the tournament, but as of yet, no host city has been announced. Ecuador are believed to be the frontrunners, but Uruguay and Paraguay could throw their hats into the ring and team up to stage the competition.
No dates have been officially confirmed, although it is thought the Copa America will be broadly in line with the 2024 version, so it is likely to take place between June and July in 2028.
History of Copa America
Copa America was founded in 1916, with the inaugural tournament won by Uruguay. Argentina, who went back-to-back in 2024, have now overtaken Uruguay as the most successful team in Copa America history with 16 titles to their name.
Aside from Uruguay and Argentina, the other winners of Copa America are Brazil (9), Paraguay (2), Chile (2), Peru (2), Bolivia (1), and Colombia (1). In hosting this year’s event, the United States will be hoping to become the first CONEMBOL champions in Copa America history. Unlike other continental competitions, Copa America has a history of inviting nations from other federations to participate.
Though primarily a CONCACAF tournament, Qatar were invited to participate in 2019, while other countries like Mexico, Costa Rica, Jamaica, and Japan have all participated in Copa America.
Which Teams Will Play in the Copa America 2028?
Qualifying for Copa America 2028 is yet to begin, but there could be a change where there might only be 10 teams taking part. In the past, the Copa America has held 12-team tournaments.
Copa America 2024 Results
Argentina clinched a record 16th Copa America title, but they needed an extra time goal from Lautaro Martinez to squeeze past a dogged Colombia at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
The 1-0 victory was slightly overshadowed by overcrowding issues, and Lionel Messi was taken off in what could be his final game for Argentina midway through the second half with injury.
Format & Schedule for Copa America 2028
Assuming there are 16 teams involved, the 16 nations are split into four groups of four. Each team will play three group matches, and the teams that finish in the top two spots will progress to the knockout rounds.
The knockout rounds begin with the quarter-finals, followed by the semi-finals, and the final. There will also be a third-place play-off match between the two losing semi-finalists.
In the knockout phases, draws are not possible, so there’s a chance of extra time and penalties in every knockout match. We will release the schedule for the Copa America 2028 once we have further details.
