What is the UEFA Nations League?
Established in 2018, the UEFA Nations League is a relatively new international soccer tournament. The tournament was introduced to replace what many regarded as “pointless” international friendlies, and nations now compete in a league-based system that can help them qualify for major international tournaments.
There is also a final contest every two years by the nations that have made it through their groups and past the knockout phase, offering nations the chance to add another trophy to their cabinets.
When is the UEFA Nations League 2023?
Fixtures in the UEFA Nations League take place during international breaks throughout the domestic soccer season. The 2022-23 final will be held on June 18, 2023, at De Kuip Stadium in the Netherlands.
History of the UEFA Nations League
As soccer tournaments go, the Nations League is new, having only been established in 2018 to make international soccer more competitive.
The inaugural tournament kicked off with 54 nations split into four leagues, but the format was slightly adjusted at the start of the 2020-21 edition.
Portugal hosted and won the first-ever Nations League tournament, defeating the Netherlands 1-0 in the final in Porto. In the second Nations League in 2020-21, France defeated Italy 2-1 at the San Siro in Milan.
The 2022-23 Nations League is the third instalment of the competition, and all eyes will be on Feyenoord when the final takes place in June of this year.
Which Teams Play in the UEFA Nations League 2023?
Fifty-five teams compete in the UEFA Nations League. Each league is split into four groups, and the highest-ranked teams in Europe make up League A.
This sees teams like England, Belgium, France, Portugal, and Spain compete against one another. At the end of the group stage, winners (those in League B, League C, and League D) are crowned and promoted, while the teams at the bottom of the groups are relegated to the league below.
The bottom league is made up of teams like the Faroe Islands and San Marino, allowing them to play against teams at their level.
