French Open Men’s Tennis - Grand Slam Final Preview and Predictions
Summary
The French Open 2022 is finally drawn to its close, and we have two gladiators set to put on a spectacle this Sunday, June 5th. After a tough two weeks of matches, only two players remain in the draw, and after many kinds of circumstances, there has been a bittersweet ending to Roland Garros. Injuries, drama, and other types of effects on the tournament have shaped it out to be an entertaining one, but not always the best possible one. There is a possibility of two historic events happening this Sunday. One, would be the King of Clay’s fourteenth Roland Garros title, and 22nd grand slam. Doing so would put him above all in the GOAT conversation and solidify his reign on the clay. On the flip side, Casper Ruud could make his own history and win his first grand slam, while also handing Nadal his fourth loss in over 190 matches.
Analysis - Rafael Nadal versus Casper Ruud
Rafael Nadal would have loved to get to the RG final in 2022, in any other way than what happened versus Sascha Zverev. The King of Clay advanced on retirement, due to an ankle injury from the German. For most of the match, it was tightly contested and looked like Nadal would be pushed to the brink at the very least. Zverev was serving for the set twice in two sets, and who knows what would have happened if he did not fall. Regardless, Nadal is in another RG final which means he is the clear favorite on his home turf. The legend will be having a mental advantage, but not sure how his physical abilities will be on the day. If he is even remotely on form, this should be a sweep for the best clay player of all time.
Casper Ruud is feeling fancy after making his first Grand Slam final, and he gets to face none other than his childhood idol, Rafael Nadal. The Norwegian has made a great start to the 2022 season and making the finals here at RG will give him confidence heading forward to his future years. Currently sitting at number seven in the world, there is no pressure on Ruud whatsoever in this final, which could be a dangerous aspect. If Ruud can find his serve early and neutralize Rafa’s crowd presence, there is a slim chance for a massive upset. There is something special about playing your idol in a Grand Slam final, but Roland Garros looks down on Ruud in this matchup, historically.
Prediction - Rafael Nadal wins his 22nd grand slam in style, claiming a victory over Casper Ruud. Take his spreads, and possibly 3-0 as well.
