Last Year’s Champion - Daniil Medvedev
Mr. Medvedev has had a turbulent 2022, a season which has seen him lacking in matchplay form for the time being.
After a rough ban was handed down to declare that he would not be able to play in Wimbledon this past June, there has been a time of thinking for the Russian.
The world #1 carries so much in his bag when he comes to the court and right now marks the point of the season where Medvedev ALWAYS thrives.
The hard-court master has enjoyed his best moments on the tour within this exact competition and time period.
When it comes to perfecting the game and making opponents play to your level, Medvedev is almost unbeatable in Canada.
Beating greats such as Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, this summer tour is something Medvedev can take comfort in.
Although he is not on par with his usual self, you could see him pull this tournament out the hat once again.
Returning to the Field - Rafael Nadal
We last saw Rafael Nadal in the quarter finals of Wimbledon, toughing out a five setter against the American Taylor Fritz.
Since that time, it was revealed that Nadal had a foot injury and even worse abdominal problems that prevented him from playing onwards.
The Spanish legend will feel more at home on these hard courts of Canada, a tournament which himself has won multiple times.
When looking at the comeback opportunities for Rafa, there would be no better time than now.
Having said that, he will need a few matches to get used to the surface and scope out his game.
If he can do that, the later rounds will get tougher and tougher for anyone he plays.
Question on the Wall? - Stefanos Tsitsipas
There are so many questions surrounding the current state of Stefanos Tsitsipas after his erratic round four loss to Nick Kyrgios at Wimbledon.
The Greek #1 and one of the top five players, has played some phenomenal tennis this season at times, but overall mediocre to his standards.
ATP Montreal was one of his breakout tournaments as a youngster, beating Novak Djokovic in the process.
He will most likely be facing the Serbian in a tough position later in the tournament, but the big question revolves around Stefanos’ mental state.
Can he return to beating top players on a regular basis? This week should serve as a good indicator.
