History of VBA

The VBA was created in 2016 with the Saigon Heat being the charter team for the league. The Heat was founded in 2011 and previously competed in the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL), which is composed of teams throughout Southeast Asia, including the Philippines, Indonesia, and Thailand. However, after the Heat launched the VBA in 2016 with help from personnel in the Philippines, the club is now able to compete against other domestic teams in Vietnam in addition to still participating in the ABL. Naturally, the Heat has been the pre-eminent team in the VBA throughout the league’s history.

Vietnam Pro Basketball League Schedule & Format

The VBA regular season typically runs from early June until late September. The regular season includes teams playing a double-round robin, meaning 1 home and 1 away game against every team. The regular season also includes a single round-robin played at a central hub. This means each team plays every other 3 times during the regular season. With 6 teams participating in the 2024 season, that means a total of 15 games.

After the regular season, the top 4 teams in the VBA make the playoffs. The semifinal round is a best-of-3 series while the finals is a best-of-5 series.

The Thang Long Warriors, who won the 2017 VBA championship, are not participating in the 2024 season. Therefore, the league is reduced from 7 teams to these 6 teams:
